Bike racks and street signs - 2014 & ongoing
The lovely Redfern Park in Chalmers Street was the site of our first big project with 5 bike racks in bright hues and yarnbombed poles. They will come and go as they age. I hope to replace them yearly on International Yarnbombing Day in June.
June 11 2016 International Yarnbombing Day - Creatures in my Garden
"Creatures in my Garden" beside Redfern Park. A Queen Babs collaboration aka a #Babcollab !!
Saturday 11 June 2016 saw us install 5 new bike rack yarnbombs under the theme Creatures in my Garden. We also installed 5 street sign pole yarnbombs.
Features of the installation:
- A frog pond with crochet lily pads, a water lily and a gorgeous amigurumi frog. The frog is by Melanie (from a Planet June pattern).
- A garden with Bernie the Bee. The sides feature flowers with stems and leaves, appliqued butterflies, caterpillar and toadstool. The top features a fabulous bee and flower by Melanie and two leaves from the International NCIE Leaf Project 2016.
- A bright happy yarnbomb in pink, yellow and orange featuring butterflies by Malinda and two birds by Cat and matching happy blossoms.
- A knitted field of crocheted sunflowers by Karen with a Rosella parrot knitted by Cat perched on top.
- A rainbow with flowers. This represents the Rainbow Bridge after the loss of our bunny Babs aka Queen Babs, the bunny.
We too journey there after death. When we come across the Rainbow Bridge, they run to us for a happy reunion and then, side by side, we cross the Rainbow Bridge together into Heaven, never again to be separated.
It is my plan to make a bunny and add it to the installation at a later date to honour Queen Babs, our late bunny, and all the wonderful hairy, furry and feathered friends that bring us such joy.
All other pieces knitted and crocheted by Jane aka Queen Babs unless listed above. Many thanks to everyone who made this amazing yarnbomb.
Many thanks to my collaborators: Karen Stephen, Cat Ayers, Melanie Klassen and Malinda Doobie.
Thanks to my mum Valerie for sewing, and to my dad Ken and husband Martin for helping knit bases. They also helped wind yarn cakes.
Big thanks to those who helped install on the day: Cat Ayers, Melanie Klassen, Fran Alison, Natalie Plant, Diane Green, Jackie Hodson, Valerie Balke, Ana Wallace, Niamh Kyriacou.
Thanks to Martin Andersen for taking the great photos and being a wonderful support.
It was great fun!
Cheers,
Jane, AKA Queen Babs, June 2016

- Beyond Blue yarnbomb to highlight the struggle many have with Depression and the work Beyond Blue in Australia does.
- Autumn Leaves yarnbomb, to celebrate the beauty and changing colours of autumn.
- House of Yoga yarnbomb, corner of Redfern and Chalmers streets. These nice people LOVE a good yarnbomb and tell me so!
- Family collaboration yarnbomb. Made by my dad Ken, my mum Valerie, my husband Martin and myself. Everyone had a hand in it from winding yarn cakes, knitting, crocheting, sewing and teaching installing.

2015 Yarnbombs
International Yarnbombing Day 13 June 2015
5 bike racks yarnbombed with a group of volunteers to help sew. Big thanks to all volunteers - Gail, Min, Yolanda, Romy, Anna and Sabina.
The bases were made on my kniting machine using 8ply acrylic using 20 balls of colour. Decorations are hand crocheted hearts and flowers as well as some buttons. Buttons allow me to hang little give away hearts known as love bombs or yarnified love bombs, a moevment started by Nallie Radloff. I gave away nearly 4 dozen on the day!
One of the racks is a collaboration between Sabina Mayer and myself (Queen Babs) to raise awareness for child abuse. You can find more about this via Sabina on Instagram @m1m1.m I knitted the base and Sabina added beautifully knitted daisies. Later she yarnbombed a circular bike rack with a daisy chain.
You can find all of these yarnbombs in Chalmers Street, Redfern, Sydney, Australia near Redfern Park.

Celebrating Family Yarnbomb May 2015
When my parents came to visit me on their annual holiday from up in Queensland, my mother Valerie Balke and I created yarnbombs and sewed them up. On this day our families all went out to lunch together at the delicious Tapeo then added a new yarnbomb to celebrate. As you do. Behind us are my father Ken and father-in-law Ole watching on. Below are some photos of the day. Thanks as always to my husband Martin for the great photos.

Under the sea yarnbomb 2013
Within it's first weekend of installation near Woolworths and the Rabbitohs practise field somone tried to 'adopt' this yarnbomb and take it home. We repaired it as best we could and it lasted fairly well. Next time I pass by with a pair of scissors it is coming down. Update: this has been removed. A South Sydney Rabbitohs football team tribute yarnbomb is nearby instead.
