Is art pointless?
Sometimes people criticise yarnbombing as a waste of yarn. THIS #yarn should be used to make clothes for the homeless they say.
Why do we have to choose one or the other? I do #yarnbombing and 'good works', I just don't brag about it, but that still doesn't make yarnbombing a waste of yarn.
So why bother with #art at all? Should all paint only be used to paint houses? All clay for cups? And pencils only for shopping lists? Is all art a waste of time serving no useful purpose? Or does it serve a greater purpose of making our existence not just bearable but enjoyable?
People make art or look at it because it gives us #happiness. And happiness is good.
Do you see that NOT making art isn’t going to save the homeless or the world?
Art nourishes the #soul: of the artist and the viewer. In our frantic-mobile-phone-wifi-techno lives, art encourages us to slow down and take time to 'smell the roses' (or admire the artistry of the yarnbomber). It allows us to escape into #creativity and be reminded that not all of life is sad and difficult.
Art #connects us. We #share an experience: a sense of wonder, pleasure of colour or style. It reminds us that life is not just about survival! #Culture is also about expressing who we are as #human beings.
Sometimes after a stressful day, turning a corner and seeing an explosion of colour makes more people happy than one scarf to one homeless person. Many people enjoy #yarnbombs, I know this because they tell me so. They chat to me and thank me while I install them, including the homeless, aged, stressed and ill.
We each choose how we try to make this world a better place. Yarnbombers and #love bombers give their art and #heart to make others smile. "Paying it forward", spreading #kindness, raising awareness of causes and giving happiness to others is a noble cause. We NEED people who are devoted to #beauty and to peace, to kindness and #compassion.
Joy is in small supply in this world. One drop of #joy can turn a glass from half empty to half full. I applaud anyone who tries to give such a gift freely.
