NCIE Yarnbomb project 2015 - 2016
We were inspired by many Indigenous artists but our main inspiration for this tree is artist Raymond Walters. His fabulous Emu Dreaming painting inspired us to plan a yarnbomb of leaves in blues and greens representing a swirl of water holes, blue skies, forests and grassy green hills.
Previously - We need leaves!! And lots of them.
We are creating new yarnbombs for the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence in Redfern, Sydney, Australia. For three trees and 7 bike racks in fact! We would love to have you get involved and contribute to our yarnbombing adventures, uplifting the community and supporting excellence.
How? One of our trees is to be covered in leaves in shades of blue and green. No fluro colours please.
Yarnbomber United member Karen Stephen has created an amazing textured crochet large leaf and shares the pattern for anyone wanting to make and send us one, two or even more.
We are adding a knitted pattern too now kindly shared by Wendy aka @tiggabrambles on Instagram. Big thanks to Wendy!
Please post crocheted leaves by 13 September 2015 and knitted leaves by 20 September 2015.
The adress for mailing is here, so let the hooking or knitting fun begin!!

KNIT - Leaf Pattern by Wendy Cole
I used size 10 needles and 2 strands of double knitting yarn. I think 3.5 is equivalent needle size.
Cast on 3 stitches
Row 1 knit 1 slip centre stitch knit 1
Row2 purl
Row 3 as row 1
Row 4 as row 2
Row 5 -increase in 1st stitch (knit and purl into stitch slip centre stitch increase into last stitch
Next row purl
I always slip first stitch on every row and knit last stitch on purl rows as this gives a firmer edge I think.
Row 7 slip first stitch and increase in next stitch slip centre stitch and increase in next stitch knit 1
Row 8 purl
Continue increasing in stitch immediately before and after central slip stitch until 13 stitches in total
Then continue knitting increasing on every 4th row as before until 19 stitches.
Knit straight until work measures 18cms
Then begin to decrease at each end of every 4th row 5times. Finally decrease on alternate rows until 3 stitches remain.
Cast off.
Using yarn and needles as above finished length is approximately 25cm
