I used 2 strands of 8ply DK yarn with a 5mm hook, but you could use 2 strands of 10ply worsted and a 6mm hook or just use super chunky yarn and the appropriate hook. This pattern doesn't work well with normal weight yarns.

DC - double crochet
Ss - slip stitch

Pattern
Ch 4. Ss into the first ch to create a ring.
Round 1
Ch 5 (equals 1 dc and 2 ch). * Dc, ch 2. *
Repeat between * and * 4 more times so you have 6 spokes.
Ss into the middle ch of the first ch 5.
Round 2
Ss into the first chain 2 gap to the left.
*Ch 4, ss, ch 7, ss, ch 4, ss. Ch 1. Ss into the next ch 2 sp.*
Repeat from * to * around the snowflake. Finish off and weave in ends.
Options
To create a loop do not finish off, And instead ch 18, ss into the same beginning space. Finish off. Weave in ends.
If you wish you may wish to block or stiffen your snowflakes. Another option is to brush with PVA type glue and sprinkle with glitter for a sparkly look.
As mine are going out in all weather on a yarnbomb, I do not block, stiffen or add glitter.
