Chunky Snowflake pattern
I used 2 strands of 8ply DK yarn with a 5mm hook, but you could use 2 strands of 10ply worsted and a 6mm hook or just use super chunky yarn and the appropriate hook. This pattern doesn't work well with normal weight yarns.
US Terms

Options
To create a loop do not finish off, And instead ch 18, ss into the same beginning space. Finish off. Weave in ends.
If you wish you may wish to block or stiffen your snowflakes. Another option is to brush with PVA type glue and sprinkle with glitter for a sparkly look.
As mine are going out in all weather on a yarnbomb, I do not block, stiffen or add glitter.
When I created and posted this pattern on Instagram it was to thank people for their support. Here's what I said:
Here's a free crochet pattern to celebrate 30 000 Instagram followers! A Chunky Snowflake for Christmas...
Thank you. Many of you are very quiet and I don't get to hear from you (though I would like to), some like posts and some write messages of #encouragement or get involved in my projects. I have even been lucky enough to meet some Instagram and Facebook pals in person and they have been just as wonderful in person as they are online.
I am grateful for you. The isolation of chronic ill health and #pain can destroy you and this medium has allowed me to #interact with people, share my #craft and life and #GIVE something back to the world.
When I look at this conversation we are having, I see multi-coloured strands of #weaving, #knitting and #crochet #stitching us together and creating an amazing #community. Again - thank you! Here is a #gift in return for all you bring to my life. You are amazing!
#Happiness and #joy to you,
Jane
