Warm Woolly Winter Love
I was commissioned to yarnbomb 8 trees to 'warm up' the Central Park Mall outdoor dining area in Chippendale
for Winter 2016 and the Vivid Festival in Sydney
for Winter 2016 and the Vivid Festival in Sydney
The "Warm Woolly Winter Love" installation includes: 8 yarnbombed tree trunks decorated with 3 dozen crocheted lovebomb hearts, 23 knitted ribbon wrapped branches and 24 crochet mandalas on reflective mirrored circles hanging on a crocheted chain, turning in the breeze and catching the light.
Late Night Photos by Martin Andersen
Each tree moves us through a colour story pink to red; red, terracotta, orange to apricot; orange to yellow; lime, green to deep sea green; teal, turquoise to aqua; blue to violet-blue; cool purple to warm purple, and lastly plum, burgundy to pink. The colours from the Central Park Mall logo were used strongly: pink, green, purple.
STATISTICS
- There are over 80 different colours of yarn, the total weighing over 9kg.
- Each tree has 8-10 shades with more colours on the matching mandalas.
- It took 5 people over 25 hours to wind the yarn for the project.
- Yarn has been sourced from Australia, the UK, the USA, China and Turkey.
- Myself, Martin Andersen and Cat Ayers knitted the bases over two weeks.
- 80 recycled CDs were used to make the mandalas.
- We created 3 hanging crocheted mandalas per tree, each with 2 mandalas and 2 CDs back to back. These take over 1 hour each to crochet and sew and were made by myself and Karen Stephen. 16 extra mandalas for replacement were also made.
- 5 dozen love bomb hearts for the trees took over 12 hours to be crocheted by hand with 36 being sewn onto the trunks.
- A team of helpers installed half the project on one day; 3 more days were needed to install the knitted ribbons and mandalas.
- Many love bomb hearts were given away during installation.
The heart pattern is available here under Super Easy Heart. Two free CD mandala patterns are up. More will be added over time.
Thank you.
None of this was possible without my partner in life, art and photography Martin aka @JAM_Project . All the great photos are his.
